On 20 December 2005, upon the recommendations of the Secretary-General and his high-level panel, the Security Council and General Assembly adopted joint resolutions 1645 and 60/180 establishing a new UN Peacebuilding Commission. The Commission, comprised of 31 members, was tasked with addressing a critical gap within the UN and global system by providing a coordinated, coherent and integrated approach to post-conflict peacebuilding and facilitating dialogue among key actors. The PBC opened in June 2006. A Peacebuilding Fund and Peacebuilding Support Office also were launched to complement and support the work of the Commission. Currently in its third year of operation, the PBC has been engaged with Burundi, the Central African Republic, Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone, where it has set up (or is developing) strategic frameworks for peacebuilding as well as monitoring mechanisms. The current chair of the PBC is the Permanent Representative of Chile, Ambassador Heraldo Munoz.
